Amherstburg residents got a chance to see the NHL's most prestigious prize up close Tuesday when the the Stanley Cup came to town.

The trophy came to Amherstburg because Los Angeles King Kevin Westgarth grew up in Amherstburg and his team won the Stanley Cup in June.

Westgarth said he wanted to share the cup with local fans and Tuesday it happened in the Canadian Tire parking lot on Sandwich Street South.

A parade took the cup over to the new United Communities Credit Union Complex on Melcohe Road, which was packed with about 1,500 people.

A hallway at the complex is being named in Westgarth's honour.

Mayor Wayne Hurst has proclaimed Aug. 21 Westgarth Day in Amherstburg.
