The average Transit Windsor fare could rise by 25 cents in 2013.
Council is scheduled to vote on a fare hike for Monday night.
Coun. Fulvio Valentinis sits on the transit board of directors and said there is little choice other than to raise fares.
"The only alternative is either cut services or ask the general taxpayer to contribute more," Valentinis said.
"When you look at the analysis of where we sit in comparison to other municipalities, we were definitely on the low end." he said of fares.
If approved the adult, student and senior one-way fares would jump to $2.75.
The last fare hike was in 2007.
"You've got increased costs with older buses; you've got the significant increased cost in fuel," Valentinis said. "Not to mention the other automatic wage increases, etcetera.
"So even with this price adjustment, we're still going be in the bottom half of comparable municipalities in terms of what we charge."
