The university says Jackie Moore died Wednesday night in hospital after collapsing as she started a workout. She was 28.

Doctors said Moore's heart "just stopped," according to school spokesman Rich Moser. An autopsy is planned, he added.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday afternoon at EIU's Lantz Arena, the school said on its website.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Moore family at this time," said EIU athletic director Barbara Burke. "Jackie was a great young person with a bright future ahead of her. She will be dearly missed."

Moore, who played high school basketball at Herman Secondary School in Windsor, was in her third season as a member of the EIU coaching staff.

After graduating from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn., in 2005, she played for the Power Basket Tigers, a professional women's team in Austria.

Before joining EIU, she spent a year working as an intern for the NBA's Detroit Pistons and WNBA's Detroit Shock.
