Burger lovers were treated to the first annual BurgerFest in east Windsor during the weekend.

The Riverside Sportsmen's Club hosted the event, which included professional and amateur hamburger grilling competitions.

"Celebrity" members of the community, including CBC personalities judged the event.

CBC Windsor was one of the sponsors of the event.

Nav Sehmbi and Rita Horbatiuk from Atmosphere Fine foods won the pro category. Their specialty burger, with smoked cheddar, caramelize onion, pear chutney, roasted red pepper, habanero and special sauce was the winning recipe.

The amateur backyard BBQ winner was Kristin Allen's chorizo sausage burger. She won a BBQ from Canadian Tire.

The winning recipe included a chorizo sausage burger, topped with goat cheese, chipotle mayo, homemade salsa and homemade guacamole. The burger was served on garlic Texas Toast.

"Most of the ingredients were local and I'll tell you, the judges had a hard time choosing," said Kim Kelly of the Riverside Sportsman Club. "It's been great. The people are great. The burgers are amazing. It's been nothing but fun."

Organizers say the response from the community was positive and that they hope it will become a summertime staple each year.

The festival, held at The Riverside Sportsmen Club, also collected donations for the Unemployed Help Centre's Food Bank.
