Apple grower had bountiful season despite heat wave that 'cooked' fruit on the tree
'It was certainly a surprise'
One Essex County Apple growing is celebrating his best-ever season despite a heat wave that roasted some fruit before it could be harvested.
Doug Balsillie and his wife run the Fruit Wagon near Colchester — an area that managed to escape most of the problems that plagued other parts of Ontario, including excessive rain and hail.
But they did encounter one challenge during a recent hot spell.
"I've never cooked apples on the tree before, and it was certainly a surprise and it was worrisome, but we got through it," he said.
Balsillie believes only one to five per cent of his crop was damaged by the heat.
