UPEI professor hurt in explosion

A researcher working on a chemical compound was hurt after a small explosion in a chemistry lab at University of Prince Edward Island on Monday morning. Dr.Yuri Romachine, a professor from Russia, was taken to hospital after the experiment exploded, sending shards of glass and black smoke into the air.

"He had a huge piece of glass in the center of his hand," says Amanda Gallant, one of two student who were in the lab. "He had smaller cuts on his face, and a lot of black on his face, but his eyes were open and he was saying 'help, help I'm losing blood.'"

Dr. Romachine injuries are not believed to be serious.

The P.E.I. Workers Compensation Board is investigating the accident.
