First responders are on the scene and police have set up a command post. A suspect was seen running from a campus pub — The Underground — located near the middle of campus and its student centre.

Police are not releasing any information about the suspect at this time.

The CBC's Tony Smyth spoke with second-year York University student Thomas, who did not give his last name. He was near the student centre shortly after the shooting.

He said he feels safe on campus, but sometimes incidents like this one make people question their safety at school.

The campus was initially locked down. However, thelockdown was lifted around 1:10 a.m. ET when Toronto police advised university officials that the campus "can resume normal operations," read a tweet by university officials.

Four of Toronto's public transit bus routes servicing the campus were bypassing the university's core bus loop, the TTC's Twitter account for service advisories tweeted.

Shortly after 1:15 a.m. ET, the TTC tweeted that full service at the York University commons has resumed.

  • An earlier version of this story reported that both women were injured after being shot. Police later revealed only one of the two women was shot.
