Wild Water Kingdom closed for day following robbery
A well-known GTA water park was kept closed on Sunday following an armed robbery that occurred at the property and involved at least four suspects.
Peel Regional Police say that a robbery took place at Wild Water Kingdom at about 5:15 a.m. Sunday, as a special event was winding down.
"There was an event being held at the park last night…they did have security there, but at some point, when it was closing at the end of the night, a robbery occurred," Const. Fiona Thivierge told CBC News in a telephone interview on Sunday.
Thivierge said that police believe "four to five" male suspects were involved in the robbery at the theme park near Finch Avenue West and Highway 427.
No shots were fired during the robbery. The suspects fled the park before police arrived on scene.
Police haven't said how much money the culprits got away with.
Thivierge said the park was staying closed on Sunday, so that police could conduct their investigation and interviews.
"You can imagine with the amount of people that were there, there were a fair number of people to interview," Thivierge said, noting that thousands of people were believed to have attended the event.
Thivierge did not have details on the event that was being held at the water park, but the Wild Water Kingdom website lists information about a "Beach Club Festival 2013: Hawaiian Luau Edition" that had been scheduled for Saturday night.
A notice on the website said the park was "sorry to inform" customers that it would not be open on Sunday, but it did not directly reference the robbery.
The water park is scheduled to reopen on Monday.
