The teen boy suspected in the killing of 17-year-old Kiranjit Nijjar has died from his injuries.

The 16-year-old, identified as Akash Wadhwa, succumbed to injuries Sunday night after falling into the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 from an overpass near Mavis Road on Friday. He was airlifted to hospital in serious condition.

Nijjar's body was discovered two hours after that incident in a wooded area in Mississauga about half a kilometre away.

Peel Regional Police have confirmed that the incidents are linked, and charges were pending against Wadhwa in connection with Nijjar's death.

Mississauga Secondary School, where the students were enrolled, will have grief counsellors on hand for students and staff.

A candlelight vigil was held on Sunday night for Nijjar at a parkette in Mississauga, with a small tree becoming a makeshift memorial as a cluster of teens dressed in black mourned together. At one point, the crowd swelled to about 100 people.

A letter to parents on the Peel District School Board website describes Nijjar as a well-liked Grade 12 honours student who excelled in sciences and math.
