SIU issues one charge in injury of 24-year-old man in custody

Const. Jason Nanton of the Toronto Police is facing an assault charge after an incident on Woodbine and Danforth Avenues in December 2013.

Nanton was among several officers who took a 24-year-old man into custody on Dec. 12, 2013. The man suffered a serious injury, resulting in a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigation.

The SIU has issued an assault with a weapon charge against Nanton.

Heis set to appear in Old City Hall courthouse on July 17.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
