A man who is accused of shooting a police officer in Martinique has been arrested in Toronto.

French authorities say that the shooting occurred as police officers were executing a search warrant in Martinique in June 2010.

The accused, Cleus Ernest, fled the scene. Police later determined that he had also fled the Caribbean island.

In December 2013, French authorities told Toronto police that they believed Ernest could be in Canada.

Late Monday afternoon, Ernest was arrested without incident in Toronto.

The arrest occurred in the Dufferin Street and Sheppard Avenue West area.

Ernest, 31, is now being held while an extradition process takes place.

Const. Victor Kwong told CBC News that police are not releasing a photo of the accused because there is not a public safety issue at this point.
