A Toronto police officer has been charged with assault in connection with an arrest made in 2006.

Det.-Const. Gerrard Arulanandam was charged by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, following a review of a court case concerning the search of an apartment in June of 2006 and the arrest of Shayne Fisher, 26, and a number of other individuals.

Fisher suffered undisclosed injuries during the arrest.

Two years later, in June 2008, the accused were acquitted of all charges.

The judge said his decision was made partly because of allegations of excessive use of force.

In a news release, the SIU said because of the allegations  "the SIU ordered a complete set of trial transcripts. [But] for reasons outside the control of the SIU, the investigation was on hold until Dec. 21, 2009 when the transcripts were finally received."

Following an examination of the trial transcripts and further investigation, charges were laid.

Arulanandam will make his first court appearance in March.
