A Timmins, Ont., woman has been charged with fraud after allegedly pretending to have cancer so she could raise money in her community.

Jessica Ann Leeder, 21, allegedly claimed to have stomach and lung cancer for several months, despite never being diagnosed with either disease, Timmins police said. Leeder was arrested Friday and charged with fraud over $5,000.

Her arrest came days after another Ontario woman, 23-year-old Ashley Kirilow of Burlington, appeared in a Milton court on fraud charges for pretending to have cancer. Kirilow is scheduled to be sentenced in January.

Timmins police did not reveal exactly how much Leeder is alleged to have raised from local people and businesses. They said their investigation began after they heard from someone helping her out.

The investigation is continuing.
