A teenage girl was struck and killed by a GO Train on the Lakeshore West line on Tuesday afternoon, near Port Credit.

Police said the teen was walking with a high-school friend when she was struck and killed on the tracks by a westbound train around rush hour.

"A 17-year-old female that was walking along the tracks with a friend, did not hear a train approaching and one friend was able to get out of the way," said Fiona Thivierge, with Peel Regional Police.

"Kids tend to take this as a shortcut across tracks to get where they're going quicker. It seems like an easy way to do it, however these trains travel at a tremendous amount of speed and it is private property."

The incident caused significant delays and train service between Union Station and Port Credit was temporarily suspended, with shuttle trains operating between Clarkson and Aldershot and a GO Bus transporting passengers further west to Hamilton.

Service was restored by 7:22 p.m. after police completed an investigation. For more GO Train service updates, visit the GO Transit website.
