An Oshawa man was spotted "waving a long sword" and wearing motocross protective gear in the middle of the night, which brought Durham Regional Police into the picture.

It was at 3:15 a.m. that police say they first received reports about the man in the Huron Street and Eulalie Avenue area.

Officers approached the man who then "raised the sword," according to a news release.

Police say the man dropped the sword when ordered to do so, but then "appeared" to reach for something within his protective clothing.

At that point, an officer deployed a Taser.

The Taser didn’t immobilize the man, but police say "it provided enough of a distraction for other officers to take physical control of the suspect."

A 22-year-old man faces charges of assault to resist arrest, possession of weapons dangerous and carrying a concealed weapon.
