Dozens of city workers are out filling in potholes this week, in a bid to deal with the damage that Mother Nature has wrought on city roads this winter.

Peter Noehammer, the director of transportation services, said the city has about twice the number of crews working on potholes this week than they normally would.

"We've ramped up our resources and we’re hoping to make a big dent in potholes in Toronto," Noehammer told CBC News in an interview on Monday.

Noehammer said that because the city had a harder winter than last year, crews are dealing with a greater number of potholes than usual.

But even as the weather warms up, Noehammer said crews will still have to attend to pothole problems throughout the rest of the year.

"Pothole repair is year-round in Toronto, unfortunately, and of course, as the infrastructure nears its age where it needs to be resurfaced and restructured, those are the roads that tend to have more prevalent pothole repair," he said.
