Friends, family and neighbours attended an emotionally charged vigil on Wednesday night for Jarvis Montaque, the 15-year-old boy shot dead Sunday in the Jamestown neighbourhood of Etobicoke.
Scores of people showed up, including many who had never met the Grade 10 student who was shot as he stood with a group of friends outside his building on Jamestown Crescent.
The vigil began with prayer but at times emotions spilled over.
Patricia Crooks, who knew Montaque, spoke and asked why Mayor Rob Ford and local Coun. Vincent Crisanti were not present at the meeting.
A representative of Crisanti’s later told CBC News the Ward 1 councillor did attend the vigil, but arrived after the woman spoke.
Crisanti also released a statement expressing outrage at the killing.
"Now is a time for us to grieve and to remember a young man who has been taken away from his family and friends," the statement read. "This senseless killing must stop now and we must unite as a community to do what it takes to keep our children safe.
Tanasha Smith, Montaque’s older sister, said the family is still looking for answers. “We don’t know who, we don’t know why,” said Smith.
Police have said that Montaque, who moved to Canada from Jamaica less than two years ago, was not known to them.
He is one of three Toronto teens to die in shootings this year.
