The Beer Store has launched a new recycling service, taking everything from televisions to house paint to cellphones, in addition to glass bottles.

The first recycling centre opened Friday morning in Toronto, and If the pilot project is successful, more centres will open across the province.

Called Recycling Plus, the initiative is a partnership between The Beer Store, Sims Recycling Solutions and Stewardship Ontario.

Ontario Environment Minister Jim Bradley was on hand to push the first returns down the rollers.

Bradley said ensuring that waste is collected and managed properly is vital to keeping our land and water clean.

"So it is great to have a facility like this: a true one-stop shop where waste-conscious Ontarians can bring their bottles, paint, batteries, and electronics," he said.

"I applaud The Beer Store's integrated approach to recycling which is a first for Ontario."

The facility is located at 299 Campbell Avenue, near Dupont Street and Lansdowne Avenue.

Acceptable items for recycling are:

  • Glass bottles
  • Plastic bottles
  • Tetra Pak containers
  • Aluminum and steel containers on which deposits have been charged
  • Paints and coatings (in containers 20 litres or smaller)
  • Interior and exterior house paints (latex, alkyd, enamel)
  • Undercoaters, primers, metal and rust paints
  • Stains, urethane, polyurethane and varnish
  • Sealers for wood, concrete, roofs and driveways
  • Batteries
  • Single-use dry-cell batteries, including alkaline, lithium, silver oxide, zinc-air and zinc-carbon batteries
  • Televisions
  • Computers
  • Printers and scanners
  • Speakers
  • Phones (including cellphones)
