Two days after a dismembered woman's torso was found in a garbage bin beneath an apartment building in Kitchener, Ont., police are still working to identify the victim.

Waterloo Regional Police revealed Sunday that the discovery made the day before was in fact human remains.

Police say the torso is believed to belong to a white female, though they are not sure of the victim's age or identity.

The torso was found wrapped in a T-shirt that read "Forget princess, I want to be a vampire."

On Monday, investigators scoured the scene where the remains were found, as they continued to look for additional body parts.

"Our effort at this point continues in trying to investigate and determine who this lady is, so that we can begin and focus the investigation on who did this to her," said Insp. Kevin Thaler, when speaking with reporters.

The torso had been brought to a Hamilton hospital for a forensic autopsy that was scheduled to take place on Monday.

For people living on the property and in the area where the torso was found, the discovery has been unsettling.

One resident told CBC News that the bin in which the torso was found is large enough that he suspects two people would have been involved in placing the remains inside.

The discovery of the woman's torso in Kitchener marks the third time in less than six months that police in southern Ontario have dealt with dismemberment cases.

In August, police in Toronto and Peel region probed the killing of a missing woman whose remains were found in two cities. Her former boyfriend was later charged with second-degree murder.

That same month, the torso of a different missing woman from New York State were found in the lower Niagara River. The victim was identified a week later. Additional remains were later found in the U.S.
