A teen has died after suffering critical head injuries at a GTA ski hill.
The 16-year-old boy was injured while skiing at the Lakeridge Resort near Uxbridge.
The teen, who was from nearby Markham, was wearing a helmet when he fell and struck his head.
John Tustian, director of operations at the ski resort, said the teen was skiing in the resort's Razor's Edge terrain park "and failed to successfully complete the [final] landing."
The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
Tustian said the accident has left people at the resort "devastated. Skiing and snowboarding is a fun environment. And so you really don't want to have this happen."
That being said, Tustian added "there's an inherent risk to skiing, snowboarding and certainly using terrain parks."
Terrain parks, he said, are increasingly popular at ski hills across North America. Used by snowboarders, the terrain parks contain jumps, hills and obstacles.
"Our terrain parks are helmet-mandatory and have been for a long time," Tustian said, "but the biggest thing you can do is make sure you're not doing something that is over your level."
The teen was taken to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital, but died of his injuries on Saturday morning.
Police have not released the name of the victim.
