There will be no bulls on Bay Street.

Elizabeth Glibbery, the manager with animal services with the City of Toronto's municipal licensing and standards department confirmed Sunday that a planned event to release live bulls on a central corridor of Canada's banking and finance district in downtown Toronto has been cancelled.

A statement from Lynn Perrier, founder of the non-profit animal rights group Reform Advocates for Animal Welfare, said the mayor's office had decided not to allow the event to proceed.

Perrier blasted the event, which was to occur at the intersection of Bay Street and Wellington, as a "poorly planned spectacle" that would have "put both the public and the animals they intended to use at risk."

The running of six 900-kilogram bulls on Bay Street had been scheduled for Tuesday, and was announced by the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair earlier this week to promote the 90th year of the festival.

A release from the Royal Winter Fair organizers said that "cowboys on horseback" would guide the animals.

The announcement of the bull run outraged some animal rights activists, including Perrier's group.

"The unpredictability of a bull would be escalated by being placed in this highly stressful situation. Should onlookers be injured or property damaged it is the animals that would pay the ultimate price with their life," Perrier said in her statement Sunday.
