Two men shot dead in a northwest Toronto neighbourhood last month were the in the area for social reasons on the night they were killed, a homicide detective said Sunday.

Toronto police were called to the scene of the double homicide in the area of Jamestown Crescent and John Garland Boulevard in the early hours of Sept. 18.

They found two men with obvious gunshot wounds, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims were later identified as Warsame Ali and Suleiman Ali, both 26. Police have said the two men were not related, but they were friends.

Det. Joyce Schertzer said Sunday that police have determined that the two men were socializing in the area on the night they were killed.

"They were here in a social capacity and they were here for a number of hours prior to their murder," she said.

Police knocked on doors for about two hours on Sunday, in an effort to obtain more information about the double homicide.

Schertzer said police canvassed the area where the slain men were found to ensure the public was aware that investigators are seeking witnesses or information related to the case.

Sunday's effort follows a prior appeal from police for information about the double homicide.
