A Brampton man has received a three-and-a-half-year sentence for his role in a deadly collision that occurred while he was intoxicated last year.

Darren Millett, 21, was behind the wheel of a Dodge Caliber that struck a Kia Rio carrying two parents and their infant son in Mississauga on Dec. 11, 2011.

The crash fatally injured Mounir Mahious, 40, who was driving the Kia Rio. He died while being transported to hospital.

His wife, Rebecca Ayuk, survived the crash that made her a widow.

Their 23-month-old son, Djibril, suffered severe injuries in the crash and is still recovering from his injuries 10 months later.

Millett’s blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit at the time of the crash. Tests showed that the car he was driving was moving at 115 km/h at the point of impact.

In a Brampton court on Tuesday, Judge Robert Kelly said the sentence handed down to Millett had to reflect society’s abhorrence of drinking and driving.

While Kelly acknowledged the remorse Millett had shown in the aftermath of the crash, the judge also noted that the young Brampton man had ignored his friends’ demands to slow down just moments before the tragic collision.

Millett told the court that what he had done was “very wrong” and that he hoped that he could be forgiven one day.
