Canada's Olympians get plenty of accolades for their achievements, but it's the athletes who wanted to give a boost to the needy in the lead-up to Thanksgiving, volunteering their time at the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Among the eight members of Canada's London 2012 Olympic team helping sort out donated food on Saturday was two-time Olympic trampoline gymnast Jason Burnett, of Etobicoke.

"We have all sorts of Canadians back home who are always supporting us and showing us a lot of love while we're away at the Games," said Burnett, who won a silver at the 2008 Beijing Games. "So it's really great to come out here and give a little bit back to the community."

Other Canadian Olympic athletes lending a hand over the weekend included bronze medal-winning soccer player Robyn Gayle and rhythmic gymnast Katrina Cameron, both from Mississauga.

They joined some 600 volunteers at the charity's bustling Toronto warehouse.

"The goal for this year's Daily Bread Thanksgiving drive is to collect 400,000 pounds of food, and raise $400,000," said executive director Gail Nyberg.

"It's a very tough time out there, so Thanksgiving is the time to give, to be thankful for what we have, so that's why I'm here," she said.
