Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Coun. Doug Ford have taken aim at the local media in recent days, accusing the press of lying in their stories.
Doug Ford has said the media is not fair in its coverage of his brother and on Monday, the tension between the Etobicoke North councillor and the press appeared to increase yet again.
When the councillor walked away from a group of reporters he was heard saying the phrase "bunch of pricks."
The mayor’s brother later told the Toronto Sun newspaper that he "didn’t mean to offend anyone" and his remarks were made "in the heat of the moment."
Coun. Paul Ainslie said the relationship that exists between the media and politicians is a "two-way street," which requires effort on both sides.
"You respect the media and the media respects you," Ainslie said Monday.
Budget chief Mike Del Grande said that the constant scrutiny of the Fords, their work at City Hall and their family’s private business is a source of frustration for the mayor and his brother.
"Even if they blow their nose, it’s a story," Del Grande said.
"I think a lot of people in Toronto are tired of it," said Del Grande, though he added that "I'm not saying that they are not without fault."
