Police boost enforcement as long weekend begins

Ontario Provincial Police officers will be out in force as drivers take to the highways this holiday weekend. (CBC)The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to take care when they take to the roads this Labour Day weekend.
Police promise to be out in force on highways as thousands of drivers head off to cottage country and other destinations. Police say their patrols will focus on four main areas: speed, seatbelts, drinking and driving and distracted driving.
More than 7,000 GTA drivers were ticketed for those offences during the August long weekend.
As the outbound commute kicked off on Friday, police were joined at a service stop on Highway 400 by a team from the province’s transportation ministry.
Ministry spokesperson Michelle Mills and her colleagues were on the lookout for unsafe vehicles.
“We're looking for mechanical defects, load security, sometimes driver qualification for the size of vehicle they're driving. Hours of service, making sure they're not tired. Pre-trip requirements, dangerous goods."
Mills and her team took at least one vehicle out of service at the checkpoint in Vaughan.
She said drivers need to take extra care when hauling heavy items back from cottage country.
