The pilot of the small plane that crashed into a cornfield in southwestern Ontario had years of experience in the cockpit, despite his young age.

Marko Misic, 20, of Toronto, and three others died when a Cessna 172 crashed in Mapleton Township on Friday evening.

The Ontario Provincial Police have identified two other Toronto men – 23-year-old Mohammad Shahnawaz Zia and 27-year-old Wasay Rizwan – and 19-year-old Victoria Margaret Luk of Mississauga as the other victims who died in the crash.

The pilot’s brother, Tony Misic, said his family is still coming to terms with their loss.

"It’s hard to believe, trying to accept the fact that such a vital part of your life is gone," Misic said in an interview with CBC News on the weekend.

Tony Misic said his brother got his glider’s licence when he was 16, a pilot’s licence when he was 17 and eventually a commercial pilot’s licence at 19.

Police have said the single-engine plane that crashed had been rented from the Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre.

The OPP said the plane took off from Breslau, Ont., and was supposed to travel to Toronto and then to Niagara Falls before returning to the airport.

Tony Misic said his brother texted him after landing in Toronto.

He later learned that his brother’s plane had crashed.

The Misic family believes that a mechanical failure must have been the cause of the crash, though that has not been confirmed by investigators.

The plane wreckage has now been removed from the scene in Mapleton Township, but the crash remains under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board.

Misic’s funeral will be held at Our Lady Queen of Croatia Church on Friday morning. He will be buried at a cemetery in Mississauga, Ont.
