More than a dozen Florida-bound flights were cancelled at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Sunday, as a result of the tropical storm that is headed toward the Sunshine State.

As of the mid-afternoon, the airport website listed at least 16 flights to Miami and Fort Lauderdale that had been cancelled on Sunday.

The airport had previously advised passengers on Twitter that "most flights to Miami have been cancelled."

Passengers were advised to check their flight status with the airline providing their flight.

Forecasters say that Tropical Storm Isaac could grow into a hurricane by the time it reaches the Florida Keys on Sunday evening.

Jessica Showers of the National Hurricane Center in Miami said that Florida will see at least four to eight inches, or 10 to 20 centimetres, of rain as a result of the storm.
