Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is in hospital with what doctors say is an "irritation" in his throat and stomach that has aggravated his asthma, according to the mayor's office.

Ford's press secretary, George Christopoulos, said in a news release late Wednesday afternoon that the mayor is in good spirits, resting comfortably and looking forward to going home as soon as the doctors let him.

Ford entered Humber River Regional Hospital on Tuesday evening after "feeling unwell."

His mother, Dianne Ford, was seen entering the hospital on Wednesday morning, walking alongside Christopoulos.

The Globe and Mail reported that the mayor’s sister, Kathy Ford, had also visited him after he arrived in hospital.

An earlier release from the mayor's office had said Ford "is expected to make a full recovery."

On Tuesday, Ford did not show up at a scheduled 10 a.m. ET media event because of "what was believed to be an adverse reaction to food," the Wednesday statement said.

"He was very disappointed to miss the event, a major milestone in the privatization of residential waste pickup in Toronto. It was the fulfilment of a promise he'd made during the campaign and he very much wanted to be there."

The mayor has previously had problems with kidney stones. He has also been trying to shed weight in recent months.

Earlier this year, Ford and his brother, Coun. Doug Ford, launched a public weight-loss challenge that raised funds for charity.

Christopoulos said Ford thanks everyone who has expressed concern and offered best wishes.
