Friends and family gathered Friday evening for the funeral home visitation for Shyanne Charles, one of two people killed in a mass shooting at a community party in east Toronto last week

Charles, 14, was killed along with Joshua Yasay, 23, when a hail of bullets flew at the community event on July 16.

At least 20 others were injured.

Charles, who had recently graduated from Grade 8, was a teenager who lived in the area. Friends have described her as a generous person, a good student and a role model.

The evening visitation was held at the Highland Funeral Home, where Saturday's 10 a.m. funeral service will also take place.

Yasay was laid to rest on Monday in Ajax, Ont. The pallbearers dressed in white suits.

Charles's family, too, has put an emphasis on clothing colour, asking those attending to wear white or grey instead of black, which Charles never wore.

Gun violence shakes city

The shooting in Scarborough was the latest in a spate of gun violence that has rocked Toronto in the past two months.

One of the people who was shot at the barbecue has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, but police have not charged anyone in the two shooting deaths.

On Thursday, Toronto police unveiled a $2-million plan to make hundreds of extra officers available for daily deployment during August and lasting until high school resumes in September.

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said the focus will be finding the people who would use guns and partake in violence that puts themselves and others at risk.

"Our intent is not to overpolice our communities, our intent is to overprotect them," Blair told a news conference at police headquarters in downtown Toronto.
