Toronto East General Hospital is defending its security practices in the wake of two high-profile cases in which psychiatric patients walked away from the premises, the CBC's Kimberly Gale reports.

Michael Eligon wandered away from Toronto East General in February wearing only a hospital gown. He was found in a residential neighbourhood, wielding a pair of scissors, and was fatally shot by police.

And just last week, Mitchell Oraa — a man police described as dangerous — left the hospital on a short-term pass and wasn't found until more than 24 hours after he was declared missing.
