A Mississauga man was fatally shot after playing some pickup soccer in west Toronto on Tuesday evening, police say.

Police responded to reports of gunfire in the parking lot of the Emmett Flats Park, near the intersection of Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue, at about 9:40 p.m.

Toronto police say Clayton Wright, 42, was found suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police and EMS workers attended to Wright, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, said Det. Sgt. Wayne Banks Wednesday.

Banks told reporters Wednesday that Wright had just left a nearby soccer field when he was shot.

"What I can tell you is that we know Mr. Wright was playing soccer. He left the field shortly before the shooting occurred," said Banks.

"And there’s the sound of gunshots and then he was found by players that he had been playing with in the parking lot."

At least a dozen people involved with the soccer game that night spoke with police overnight.

"The co-operation that we have received from the public so far has been tremendous," Banks said.

As the investigation is still progressing, Banks said police cannot say much about who may be responsible.

"It’s too early for us to say if he was targeted,” said Banks. "The only thing I can say is that we believe that it’s isolated."

Police say there is no indication that Wright’s death has anything to do with gangs.

Banks said that Wright was not known to police and had no criminal record.

He had a brother and sister who live in Toronto. His parents live in Jamaica and were due to visit the city next month for a pre-planned trip.

"Unfortunately, now they have to come to Toronto to bury their son and learn about the death of their son," said Banks.

Banks said Wright was self-employed, though he did not elaborate further.

Wright is the victim of the city’s 29th known homicide this year. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
