Hamilton airport emergency crews were called when a vintage aircraft belly flopped during landing at the airport Friday evening.

Frank Scremin, president and CEO of Hamilton International airport, said emergency crews were notified that a T-bird with two people on board had gone off the tarmac around 6:30 p.m.

The crew was not injured, but Scremin said there was a fuel spill from a tank on the plane.

The Hamilton fire department was called to the airport as a precaution, said spokesman Dave Christopher.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been notified and is likely to investigate the incident. The plane is in Hamilton as part of a two-day airshow that begins Saturday morning.

On its website the airshow says the T-33 entered service in the RCAF as a training aircraft for fighter planes.
