Toronto council has voted unanimously to rename the Toronto Island Ferry Terminal in honour of former NDP leader and city councillor Jack Layton.

Council voted 41-0 in favour of the name change at council's meeting on Wednesday morning.

Afterward, Coun. Mike Layton tweeted his thanks to council for recognizing his late father.

“My sincere thanks to City Council and mayor for approving the renaming of the Toronto Island Ferry dock,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “A very lovely and fitting tribute.”

The motion was introduced by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who made it his key item at the meeting.

"Renaming the Toronto Island Ferry Terminal in memory of Jack is a fitting tribute. Not only did he represent waterfront communities during his career as an elected representative, but he was also a great supporter of the Island Public School and helped save Island residents’ homes," Ford said in a release last week when he first announced the motion.

Jack Layton was elected to Toronto council in 1982. He left council after running unsuccessfully for mayor in 1991.

Layton died last August of cancer. He was 61.
