A man in his 50s has suffered head injuries after his bicycle was struck in Toronto's east end on Sunday afternoon.

Toronto police say they are still determining the precise sequence of events that led to the collision in the intersection of Victoria Park Avenue and Arncliffe Crescent, a few blocks north of Eglinton Avenue.

The cyclist was travelling west across the intersection when he was hit.

Police say a sport-utility vehicle rear-ended a Toyota car that was stopped at a red light in the northbound lanes of Victoria Park Avenue.

That collision pushed the Toyota into the intersection.

Somehow, the cyclist was struck and his bicycle became trapped under the SUV. His backpack also ended up stuck on the side of the Toyota.

However, police say they do not believe the cyclist was dragged under the SUV with his bicycle.

The cyclist was rushed to hospital, where he is in serious, but stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation. It is not yet clear if the cyclist was wearing a helmet when he was struck.
