Toronto police have arrested a first-year law student in connection with an incident in which a shotgun was fired through an apartment door on the York University campus.
Police were called to an apartment on the campus last Saturday morning after gunshots were reportedly heard.
A subsequent investigation determined that “a projectile was shot through an apartment door,” though the person inside was not injured.
Det. Sgt. Al Coulter told reporters Thursday that an investigation determined that the woman who lived inside the apartment had made prior complaints about someone tampering with her door.
Police believe the accused — a 35-year-old male law student — is linked to those incidents, though Coulter said he could not go into the full details as the case is now before the courts.
“We started our investigation, went backwards and determined that somebody — and we believe it’s our suspect — was tampering with her door in some form or other, whether it was keys or lock-picks or whatever it was, tampering with that door,” said Coulter.
“Again, we don’t know the reason for that at this point.”

“The victim does not know of anybody that would want to cause her any harm whatsoever,” Coulter said during a news conference.
Police have seized several weapons from the accused, including a Remington shotgun.
Coulter said the accused faces 10 charges, including careless use of a firearm.
