Toronto police are investigating after finding out about an attempted jewel heist from their Toronto Fire Department colleagues.

Firefighters were called to a plaza at 1650 Jane Street, south of Lawrence, late Sunday night.

When they arrived they found smoke in a pizza parlour, but quickly realized the source of the smoke was the jewelry store next door.

Firefighters forced entry into the store, cutting through the bars on the front door to get inside.

Once inside they discovered a hole in the roof.

They say it looked as if someone entered the jewelry store through the roof and was trying to cut into the safe with a cutting torch when the fire started.

The cutting torch was left behind.

Firefighters called Toronto police who have launched an investigation.
