A religious shrine near Midland, Ont., is fighting to prevent a private recycling company from setting up shop nearby.

The Martyrs’ Shrine was built to honour eight Jesuit saints who lived, worked and died in the area nearly four centuries ago.

Thousands of people visit the shrine each year, which is located on a property where people can worship in peace and quiet.

But a recent decision to allow a private company to build a recycling centre on a nearby property has raised fears that its eventual operations could disrupt the peaceful nature of the site.

The Midland mayor and the town officials who approved the plan for the new recycling centre say that the recycler’s presence would bring up to 20 jobs into the community.

But the people who operate the shrine say that their own site employs five times as many people and brings in an estimated $44 million in tourism each year.
