Crews began demolishing a charred storage facility in Toronto's west end on Tuesday, where small spot fires continue to burn more than a week after the blaze first broke out.

Toronto Fire Division Cmdr. Mike McCoy said the demolition process at Save and Secure Self Storage will take time, as crews are forced to contend with train traffic and other disruptive factors at the site.

“It could take anywhere up to possibly a couple of weeks,” McCoy told CBC News.

Firefighters will have to remain on site, to be on hand for when crews uncover a portion of the structure where small fires are still burning.

“We still have small, small spot fires, believe it or not,” McCoy said.

“We still see smoke coming out of the building in one particular area.”

The blaze at the Pelham Avenue storage facility, located in the Dundas Street West and Dupont Street area, broke out on the morning of Jan. 9 and escalated into a five-alarm fire.

The fire left the building completely gutted.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. McCoy said investigators need to have better access to the site to further their investigation.

“You need to get in to do the investigation to determine where it started, what started it and until you can get in, it’s impossible to tell that,” said McCoy.

“So as demolition progresses, it may or may not be possible to still determine the cause. That just remains to be seen.”
