Firefighters continue to keep a close eye on hot spots at a west-end storage facility that has been burning for more than 24 hours.
The blaze at Save and Secure Self Storage is mostly under control, but Toronto Fire District Commander Mike McCoy said it is still not clear when the fire will be completely extinguished.
“We could be here all day again. It wouldn’t surprise me,” McCoy told CBC News, as firefighters continued to hit parts of the building with water cannons.
Firefighters first responded to the blaze at 97 Pelham Ave., near Dundas Street West and Dupont Street, at 6:13 a.m. on Monday morning.
In the hours that followed, nearby townhouses and schools were evacuated as firefighters sought to bring the five-alarm blaze under control.
One firefighter was injured after a floor collapsed from under his feet. He suffered only minor injuries.
The fire left some local residents without water and power.
On Tuesday, St. Josaphat Catholic School remained closed for a second straight day because of the fire.
The cause of the fire is still not known. But it is believed that all of the contents inside the storage facility have been destroyed.
