A driver is dead after his speeding car smashed into a concrete pole Monday morning, splitting his vehicle in two in the Kennedy Road and Finch Avenue area.

Police have said the Honda Civic involved in the crash was racing with another car, which fled the scene around 6 a.m.

The intersection remains closed in all directions as accident investigators comb the scene of the wreckage.

The front of the driver's car came to rest about 20 metres away from the rear section, which tore off in the collision and settled at a nearby gas station.

The driver, who was in his 20s, had to be cut out of the vehicle and was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital with serious head injuries. He was pronounced dead at hospital. His name has not yet been released.

Debris scattered all over the streets and the intersection is expected to remain closed until around noon.

The incident, which happened at around 6 a.m., was one of several motor vehicle accidents on the holiday Monday.

A 19-year-old passenger was also killed at Dufferin Street and Major Mackenzie Drive after his car veered off the road and hit a hydro pole.

In a separate accident, two other people were hurt – one with serious head injuries – after a car crashed into a building at Yonge and Finch.
