A Mississauga man involved in a deadly accident on a Brampton highway four years ago was handed a conditional sentence of house arrest on Monday.

Brian Machado, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death for his role in the collision that killed Cynthia Dougherty and Maria Dalsass on Oct. 6, 2007.

However, a judge will decide on Sept. 21 how long he will have to serve. The Crown is asking for two years and a five-year driving ban while the defense is asking for less than a year.

Machado and his brother, Steven, were heading south on Highway 50 in separate vehicles, weaving through traffic and travelling 40 km/h over the limit of 80 km/h.

Steven Machado lost control of his car and slammed into a Pontiac Grand Am carrying the Dougherty and Dalsass, pushing it into an oncoming pickup truck. Both women died at the scene.

House arrest too lenient

More than 30 people were packed into the small courtroom, including family members and friends of both the victim and the accused.

Some sobbed openly as they read victim-impact statements, CBC's Jeff Semple reported.

Lyne Greer said house arrest was too lenient.

"There won't ever be a sentence that's going to be enough," she said. "We've lost this person forever."

Dalsass's husband, Murray Osborne, said his life is still in shambles.

"It's kind of like having a wound and it's getting to the point where it's almost healed up and then you have to go through all of this again," he said.

Steven Machado pleaded guilty to two counts of negligence causing death two years ago, but he maintained he wasn't racing with his brother at the time of the crash, as was alleged by the prosecution.

At a hearing last January, a judge ruled that the brothers weren't street racing at the time of the crash.

Steven Machado was sentenced to 22 months in jail in 2010 but has since been released.
