More than 1,200 have signed up to a Facebook event organized by the Toronto Cyclists Union. CBCSome Toronto cyclists are planning to ride down Jarvis Street this evening to protest a recent decision to scrap bike lanes on the main thoroughfare.
More than 1,200 have signed up to a Facebook event organized by the Toronto Cyclists Union which plans to "take lanes of traffic" at 6:30 p.m.
The rolling demonstration which the page describes as "family friendly," is a response to last week's city council motion to remove bike lanes on Jarvis Street in exchange for a separated lane on nearby Sherbourne Street.
The vote passed 28 to 9.
Removing the Jarvis bike lanes and returning to a reversible fifth lane for vehicle traffic will cost about $200,000. The Jarvis Street bike lane, installed last year, cost about $59,000.
