A 22-year-old man is dead and a baby is in hospital in stable condition after shots were fired inside a home in Whitby.
Durham Regional Police were called to investigate a domestic dispute at 36 Clune Place near Garden Street and Taunton Road East at around 5 p.m. Monday.
They found Andre Hogg dead of a gunshot wound inside the house.
They also found a 13-month-old girl who had suffered a gunshot wound. She was flown to Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto, where she remains in stable condition.
Neighbours told CBC News that Hogg is the baby's father, but police would not confirm this.
The province's Special Investigations Unit was also called to the scene and has taken over the investigation. The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the incident.
"As a result of their presence at the scene, the SIU becomes involved to investigate what, if any, was the interaction between the deceased and officers with the Durham Regional Police," said SIU spokesperson Jasbir Brar.
Though few details were provided about the incident, Sgt. Nancy Van Rooy said Durham police did not fire their weapons.
"There were shots fired but there was not an exchange of gunfire between any persons within that residence and members of Durham Regional Police," she said.
Durham Regional Police will also be conducting their own investigation.
The SIU is an arm's length Ontario agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
