A new study says electricity prices will rise in Ontario even if the Liberals' green energy projects are scrapped.
A study says Ontario's hydro prices could rise even if its green energy projects are discontinued. (The Canadian Press) The report says it would be no cheaper to generate power using natural gas.
The study forecasts the price of electricity over the next 20 years under two scenarios: with the Liberal government's Green Energy Act in place or with it scrapped, as the Conservatives promise to do.
Study author Tim Weis is with the environmental think-tank, the Pembina Institute.
"Backing away from the current targets on renewables really isn't going to have a major cost savings," said Weis. "In fact, prices are still going to go up."
The report uses data from independent sources such as the U.S. Department of Energy.
It says power bills will rise sharply in Ontario, with or without new wind farms and solar panels.
"If you're to replace that with something else, that something else (in this case natural gas) is likely around the same price."
Weis said using natural gas to generate more electricity is risky.
If demand for natural gas surges in the U.S., that would make your power bill even higher than predicted.
