Transit riders in Vaughan are being warned to prepare for a possible bus strike next week.
More than 200 drivers and mechanics for York Region Transit could be on strike as early as Monday.
A notice on the YRT website says the workers will "invoke the right to strike as of 12:01 a.m. on February 14 if a new contract agreement for York Region Transit’s [YRT] Southwest Division is not reached."
A strike could affect as many as 28,000 riders in Vaughan, as well as other bus routes in Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Auroria, Markham and King Township.
The drivers are members of ATU Local 113. Their employer is Veolia Transportation Services, a private firm that is contracted by the region to provide transportation services.
The next meeting between the union and the employer is not scheduled to take place until Sunday.
"This scenario provides little advance notice to passengers, residents and YRT officials should a strike in YRT’s Southwest Division be confirmed," said the notice on the website.
"York Region is hopeful that the two parties will reach an agreement without a strike, but advises residents to ... stay informed and plan ahead."
