Toronto police say they are now investigating the city's fifth homicide of the year after a woman who was assaulted a week ago succumbed to her injuries.
Ilka Dimitrova, 62, who was found on Jan. 13 suffering from serious injuries in an apartment at 360 Ridelle Avenue near Eglinton Avenue West and Allen Road, died on Monday, Toronto police told CBC News.
She died of strangulation, police said.
Her son Ivo Anguelov, 41, was originally charged with attempted murder. Those charges have now been upgraded to second degree murder, police said.
He is due to appear in court Jan. 31.
Police say they also found an 11-month-old in the home at the time. The baby was not injured.
