A woman who says her husband slashed her throat in Jamaica last week is planning a return to her home in Ajax, Ont., after testifying at a preliminary hearing.

Cathy Lee Martin, 34, testified Tuesday in Jamaica.

Her husband, Paul Martin, 43, who is charged with attempting to murder her near the resort area of Montego Bay, has been denied bail.

"They were supposed to be on their way to the airport and out of that country on that day [Dec. 23.] He drove to the lone road and said that he was going to take photographs," said Det. Sgt. Pheonia Watson of the Jamaica Constabulary Police Force.

Martin — a Grade 5 teacher at St. Francis de Sales elementary school in Ajax — was arrested shortly after his wife was rescued by a taxi driver at the side of a highway after jumping from the vehicle her husband was driving.

Police said Paul Martin came to the police station saying he had been sightseeing with his wife and they pulled over to the side of the road so he could get out and take some pictures.

He claimed that when he returned to the car he saw another man inside the vehicle behind his wife.

"He gave us a report that he was held up by a man who slashed his wife's throat," Watson said. "However, further interviewing with him, we found out that he was lying and his wife identified him as the man who slashed her throat."

Watson said Cathy Lee Martin was treated and released from hospital and her neck was heavily bandaged to protect the stitches.

Martin was staying with relatives at a local resort, but it is believed she will return to Canada on Wednesday.

Paul Martin will be held in custody until his next court appearance on Jan. 21, 2011.
