Toronto mayor-elect Rob Ford has confirmed who will make up his inner circle in the new session of council.
Speaking at a Monday afternoon news conference, Ford detailed the seven councillors who would be in charge of the seven standing committees that play a key role in running the city:
- Paul Ainslie will chair government management.
- Norm Kelly will chair parks and environment.
- Giorgio Mammoliti will chair community development and recreation.
- Denzil Minnan-Wong will chair public works and infrastructure.
- Peter Milczyn will chair planning and growth management.
- Cesar Palacio will chair licensing and standards.
- Michael Thompson will chair economic development .
While the appointments were a poorly kept secret — a variety of media organizations had confirmed them last week — Monday's news conference represented the first time Ford has spoken publicly about his team.
The committee chairs will all sit on the city's executive committee, along with the deputy mayor and four other at-large councillors who will be elected by city council. Ford also outlined his picks for the other four who should sit on the executive committee:
- Coun. Michael Del Grande, who will serve as budget chief.
- Coun. David Shiner.
- Incoming Coun. Jaye Robinson.
- Incoming Coun. Michelle Berardinetti.
Ford also picked Coun. Doug Holyday to take the deputy mayor post and chair the striking committee, which makes recommendations to other councillors about key appointments to council.
Coun. Karen Stintz will lead the TTC, while Coun. Frances Nunziata is the new speaker and Coun. John Parker will be her deputy.
Ford will be sworn in Wednesday.
