Outgoing Toronto mayor David Miller will be advising the World Bank on urban and environmental issues after he officially leaves city council next month.

Miller will be reporting to World Bank president Robert Zoellick. Miller said it is a part-time position and he is expected to help the World Bank formulate a strategy to fight climate change and poverty.

"What we need to do is create the modern economy by doing the right thing for the environment," said Miller.

"I'll be working in that capacity...helping private sector companies grow that are sustainable, providing advice to institutions such as the World Bank. And I'll keep working with cities, because I think that's where the solutions are. We need to create urban sustainable economies, and that's what I'll be working on."

Miller, who announced last September that he wouldn't seek a third term in office, officially cedes his position to mayor-elect Rob Ford on Dec. 1.
